FORMER Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko was jailed for seven years by a Kiev court overnight after being found guilty of exceeding her powers in ordering a subordinate to sign a 2009 gas deal with Russia.
The ruling, decried by the blonde Orange Revolution leader as „authoritarianism” was condemned by Europe and Russia, while her bitter rival, President Viktor Yanukovych, said the decision was „not final”.
Judge Rodion Kireyev said Tymoshenko „intentionally used her powers to criminal ends”.
He sentenced her to seven years, the term prosecutors were seeking. She also was ordered to personally repay losses in the gas deal of 1.5 billion hryvina ($US189 million) and barred from holding a government post for three years.
Yanukovych said the case would damage Ukraine’s efforts for European integration.
